How Will My Tooth Be Restored?
We prefer to use the most advanced tooth coloured composite resin fillings to nearly invisibly repair teeth, including small chips and cracks, areas that are worn down and small to medium sized cavities caused by tooth decay. You may also hear these tooth coloured fillings being called white fillings. The procedure to place these fillings is quick and non-invasive and we will make sure you are kept comfortable with a local anaesthetic.
How Long Will My Composite Resin Filling Last For?
Your new tooth coloured filling should last for several years as this material is very hardwearing and strong. However no filling will last forever, and you will eventually need to replace it to ensure your tooth is still fully protected and that you can eat comfortably without any pain or sensitivity, as often occurs when a filling begins to leak.
What Is The Difference Between An Inlay And An Onlay?
An inlay restores the central part of the flat chewing surface of a back tooth, but an onlay is slightly larger and can restore this central area plus one or more of the cusps. Tooth cusps are the raised points on a tooth; on a back tooth these are located on the edges closest to your cheeks and tongue.
I Have Silver Coloured Fillings: Can I Get Them Replaced?
Silver coloured fillings are made from amalgam and although they were popular in the past, tooth coloured fillings are a healthier and far more attractive method of restoring your teeth. We can safely remove any older style amalgam fillings and dispose of them properly as they do contain mercury. Our dentists keep a close eye on the condition of older fillings and while we might not recommend you replace them immediately, you will need to do so eventually as these amalgam fillings will begin to crumble and leak.
I Have A Big Cavity In My Back Tooth: Can I Have A Tooth Coloured Filling?
If you have a large cavity in one of your back teeth then we can still restore this tooth with a tooth coloured filling, but we may suggest using porcelain instead. This is because the latest porcelains are very strong and will not crack or distort when they come under pressure during chewing. These fillings are also called inlays and onlays, and are longer lasting than composite resin fillings.
Can Tooth Coloured Fillings Hide The Gaps In Between My Teeth?
Yes, we can use tooth coloured composite resin to help reduce or even close these gaps completely, depending on their size. This can be a more cost-effective choice than an alternative treatment such as porcelain veneers and is an option we can discuss with you when you visit us.
